About Suncorp Stadium
Suncorp Stadium, also known as Lang Park, is one of the regular homes of the Wallabies and the permanent home of the Queensland Reds. Due to the fiery crowds that attend games here, it’s also commonly nicknamed ‘The Cauldron’. Suncorp Stadium was inducted into the RugbyPass Hall of Fame in 2021.
First built in 1914 on the site of a former cemetery, in its early days Suncorp Stadium was a multi-purpose sports venue where cycling, athletics and football were all popular. However, in 1957, Brisbane Rugby League took over the lease and it primarily became a rugby ground.
In the 1990s, it was decided that the city of Brisbane needed a state-of-the-art rectangular stadium. As a result, Suncorp Stadium was the subject of a $280 million redevelopment in 2001. Ever since, Suncorp Stadium has become one of the finest grounds in the world. Now, in addition to being the home of rugby league in Queensland, it has also become the state’s premier venue for rugby union.
Suncorp Stadium hosted its first game of rugby union at the 2003 Rugby World Cup. In 2005, it then officially became the home of the Queensland Reds. In addition, the Wallabies have regularly played home games at Suncorp Stadium, including crucial Bledisloe Cup ties. Since its redevelopment, it has hosted fixtures in the Rugby League World Cup, the Rugby World Cup, the Super Rugby final, the A-League Grand Final and the NRL Grand Final.
Although it’s primarily a rugby ground, Australia’s national football team, the Socceroos, also regularly play at Suncorp Stadium. In addition to this, the ground is also used for major concerts, with Taylor Swift, U2 and Ed Sheeran all recently performing at the ground.
