About Thomond Park
Thomond Park is one of the finest stadiums in Ireland. It’s the home of Munster Rugby, Shannon RFC and UL Bohemians RFC. In the past, it has also hosted Rugby World Cup matches and Ireland internationals. Thomond Park was inducted into the RugbyPass Hall of Fame in 2021.
First opened in 1934, Thomond Park is a historic stadium that holds a special place in the hearts of Irish rugby fans. It’s famed for its raucous noise during open play and its complete silence when players kick for goal. Plus, it also gained a formidable reputation as a place for teams to visit when Munster went on a 12-year unbeaten run at the stadium in the Heineken Champions Cup between 1995 and 2007.
In 1998 and 1999, following the introduction of professional rugby in Ireland, Thomond Park was upgraded, with a new pitch, floodlights and terracing introduced. Then, in 2006, the stadium was entirely redeveloped and the capacity was expanded to 25,630. Shortly following this, in 2013, Thomond Park was named as The Best Rugby Stadium in the World.
Although it’s primarily the home of Munster Rugby, Shannon RFC and UL Bohemians RFC, Thomond Park has hosted 12 Ireland international matches. The last time Ireland played at Thomond Park was in 2015, when they faced Barbarians FC. However, the last full international to take place at the ground was in 2008, when Ireland defeated Canada 55-0. In addition to this, in 1999, Thomond Park also hosted a Rugby World Cup game between Australia and the United States.
On top of this, although it’s a dedicated rugby stadium, Thomond Park has also hosted two Ireland international football matches, two international rugby league matches and concerts from notable names like Elton John, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen.
