Fiji Women’s Rugby Union Team

The Fiji women’s rugby team is one of Oceania’s most accomplished and decorated sides. Commonly referred to by their nickname, Fijiana, the team made their Rugby World Cup debut at the 2021 tournament. They also contest the annual Oceania Rugby Women’s Championship, where their success is unrivalled.

Are you a fan of the Fijianas? Here you’ll find all of the info you need, from their history and results to their upcoming matches and latest announcements. Keep scrolling to explore the Fiji women’s rugby team.

Fiji Women’s at the Rugby World Cup

Although the team was formed back in the 1990s, the Fijianas have only participated in one Rugby World Cup so far. They made their debut at the 2021 tournament and ended their first campaign during the pool stage.

The Fiji women’s rugby team contested three matches. They opened with a 19-84 defeat against England, soared with a 21-17 victory over South Africa and ended with a 44-0 loss against France.

Prior to 2021, the Fijianas missed the first eight Rugby World Cups. They were not invited to the five tournaments between 1991 and 2006, and they did not qualify for the three between 2010 and 2017.

Fiji will make their second Rugby World Cup appearance in 2025. The team qualified after winning the 2024 Oceania Rugby Women’s Championship.

History of the Fijiana Women’s

The history of the Fiji women’s rugby team can be traced back to 1997, when the team played in a match against a visiting United States XV team. Nine years later, the Fijianas contested their first official test. They travelled to Tonga and played against Samoa in a one-off Women’s Pacific Tri-Nations encounter. The match ended 27-15 to Samoa. Undeterred, the Fijianas dug deep. Four days later, they came back fighting and beat Tonga 52-5.

Next, in 2016, Fiji became one of the founding sides in the Oceania Rugby Women’s Championship. Here they have enjoyed unparalleled success. They’ve won the title four times between 2016 and 2024, a figure that makes them the tournament’s most decorated and feared opponents.

During this same period, Fiji participated in their first Rugby World Cup. Then, in 2024, they qualified for the upcoming 2025 RWC.

Fiji Women’s Rugby Squad

A team with strong camaraderie, the current Fiji women’s rugby squad contains some of Super Rugby’s best players. The majority of the team represents Fijian Drua, a talented side that claimed back-to-back Super Rugby titles in 2022 and 2023.

This includes names like Sulita Waisega (blindside flanker), Merewai Cumu (centre), Merewalesi Rokouno (centre), Luisa Tisolo (inside centre) and Asinate Serevi (lock).
