Sharks Rugby Team

The Sharks rugby team, also known as the Cell C Sharks, is a South African rugby team that competes in the country's Currie Cup competition.

Read on to discover even more about the Sharks rugby team. On this page, you can find out everything there is to know about the side. As well as an in depth history of the team and an analysis of the current squad, you'll also find the team's latest results and upcoming fixtures.

Although the team was initially founded in 1890, it was incredibly unsuccessful in its early years. In fact, the Sharks rugby team did not reach the final of the Currie Cup until 1956, and they did not win the competition for the first time until 1990. Coincidentally, the team's first success came as it was celebrating its centenary year.

Since, the Sharks rugby team has experienced a change in fortunes. Following the side's success in 1990, they've won the title on another 7 occasions, most recently in 2018. They also reached the final in the 2020-21 season and the 2021 season.

For most of the history of the side, the Sharks rugby team was known simply as Natal. Until the mid-1990s, they were also known informally as the banana boys. However, at this time, the team was rebranded and has been known as the Sharks ever since.

Today, the Sharks rugby team is undoubtedly one of the finest in the competition. The team plays its home games at Jonsson Kings Park Stadium, where 55,000 fans can pack in to watch the side battle for honours.

Since the formation of the Sharks rugby team, almost 100 players who have represented the side have gone on to represent the Springboks. This includes some legends of South African rugby, including André Joubert, John Smit, Bismarck du Plessis, François Steyn, Ruan Pienaar and Pieter-Steph du Toit.

Today, the Sharks rugby squad is as strong as it has ever been. As a result, it contains a number of current Springboks. Some of the stars of the side include current Springboks captain Siya Kolisi, Lukhanyo Am and Makazole Mapimpi.
