Our full Top 100 list is coming soon. Come back on the 11th December 2025 to see which players made the 40 - 21 spots.
these lists are fun to read, but actually mean little, especially on positions 20 -100 …. how do you compare the skills of a winger to those of a prop (other than wearing the same type of jersey, provided they are within the same team, they have little in common)?
it then comes down to personalities on (and off) the field, the range being the dyed hair tic-tocker who plays a bit of rugby (and is, admittedly, good at it) to the guy who might be able to unite a whole nation …..

The 40-60 category makes more sense - exceptionally solid players, who make big contributions but not possibly the stars of the game.
I think George Ford was very lucky to place 60th. People forget he was poor last Autumn, dropped in the 6 Nations and only played well on the Summer tour & Autumn Internationals, so feels that his last 4 performances have tilted things in his favour.

If Tuisova was on any other T1 nation he wouldn’t be ranked this low.

It would be way better if they did a top 7 in each position ranked not just on international performances but club ones too all throughout the year.

I am surprised that Marcus Smith & Louis Rees-Zammit are placed this highly, as I haven’t seen anything on the pitch this year that really backs it up. Surprised they have made the Top 100 given the quality of the competition.
From a stats perspective, I am also surprised that Wilco Louw is not much lower - he’s probably one of the most important cogs in the SB’s success this season. It will be interesting to see how many tightheads are ahead of him other than Thomas Du Toit.

From the next generation of superstars showing off their athletic gifts to millions of fans to the modern day greats, who are still very much at the peak of their powers, rugby has, arguably, never been in such rude health.
This begs the question, ‘who are the world’s greatest players?’ and of course, ‘who is the greatest player in the world right now?’ Well, our esteemed journalists have pulled together such a list and we are sure the debate is about to get heated.
The Best Rugby Players in the World According to Our Panel of Experts
To ensure this list is a fair reflection of the best rugby players in the men’s game right now, it was carefully curated by a global panel of leading journalists and writers.
Within our panel, there is representation for both hemispheres, as well as more than a hundred of years of collective rugby knowledge, experience and expertise behind the placings.

A week into 2025, the Toulon loose forward tore the cruciate ligament in his right knee in a Top 14 match, an injury that kept him out of action until September. Such is his importance to France as a player and leader, he was recalled to the squad for the November international against Fiji. At 6ft 6ins, he started in the second row and was outstanding; perhaps a hint of things to come given the competition for places in the back row and the shortage of quality locks in France. - GM","copy2":"Ollivon scored his 17th international try in his comeback Test against Fiji, extending his record as France's leading forward try-scorer.","copy3":"“I've rarely seen a player who is so strong and athletically complete… we missed him enormously last season during the final phase.” - Pierre Mignoni, Toulon coach
"hasCopy1":true,"hasCopy2":true,"hasCopy3":true
https://eu-cdn.rugbypass.com/webp-images/images/team-images/logos/png/213.png.webp?maxw=60&v=1762927734
"copy1":"The 25-year-old Williams made his Test debut in 2023, and at 145kg (almost 23st), he became the heaviest All Black in history. these lists are fun to read, but actually mean little, especially on positions 20 -100 …. how do you compare the skills of a winger to those of a prop (other than wearing the same type of jersey, provided they are within the same team, they have little in common)?
it then comes down to personalities on (and off) the field, the range being the dyed hair tic-tocker who plays a bit of rugby (and is, admittedly, good at it) to the guy who might be able to unite a whole nation …..
I guess James Lowe will be top 10 again 🤦♂️
😀
Ragebait list. No actual thought goes into these things.
The 2 South Africans on the panel are unknown in South Africa
Maybe you can contribute next year.
Having Esterhuizen, Hansen, and Matera that low should get a yellow card they all excel in their positions
Along with Mitchell, Jorgensen, Wainiqolo, Williams and Louw
LEWY ❤️ Damian McKenzie
I can’t wait to see who’ll be No. 1!
The ‘traditional’ Francophobia suggests it will not be Dupont
This’ll be entertaining! Even as an brit, Damian McKenzie is still my no1
